Our Periodontics
Periodontics is the dental specialty focusing exclusively in the inflammatory disease that destroys the gums and other supporting structures around the teeth.
Use of Dental Crowns
- To protect a weak tooth from breaking or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth
- To restore an already broken tooth or a tooth that has been severely worn down
- To cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn’t a lot of tooth left
- To hold a dental bridge in place
- To cover severely discolored or crooked teeth
- To be placed on top of a dental implant
- To make a cosmetic modification
A periodontist is a specialist who deals with the diseases and treatment of any of these supporting structures
Should I Be Concerned if I’m Referred to a Periodontist?
Quite the contrary! You should feel good that your general dentist wants you to receive the best care possible, and confident that you’ll be treated by a specialist who has four years of college education, four years of dental education, and at least three years of advanced training in periodontal dentistry and dental implants. What’s more, the chances are that your periodontist has done hundreds, if not thousands, of procedures similar to the one you’ll be having done.
Gingiva
The cause is poor oral hygiene. Untreated gingivitis can lead to tooth loss and other serious conditions.
Periodontal ligament
the dense fibrous tissue which attaches the tooth to the alveolar bone. It is continuous coronally with the gingival connective tissue.
Alveolar bone
the bone that supports the tooth and is connected to the root of the tooth via the periodontal ligament, which receives the force of the bite.
Cementum
calcified connective tissue covering the outer surface of the root of the tooth and provides a medium for insertion of periodontal ligament fibers.
